Born on Malfi, Kadis quickly gained power for her family with her unerring ability to discern the true motivations of others. She be became over-confident however, making enemies of the Masqued after inexplicably ascertaining both the proclivities and worse, identities, of several of their number. Disowned by her house in a politically expedient manoeuvre, she fled in desperation. Unknown to her, she had been spotted by an agent of the Calixian Conclave district office, who had their own less political reasons for keeping tabs on the nobles. After gratefully accepting sanctuary she was brought into fold of the Order of the Bloody Rose at the Shrine of Seventeen Martyrs near Malfi, before being brought to Scintilla to advise the nobility, but also to help root out a Masqued satellite lodge.
Originally sceptical, Kadis found that as her faith in the emperor grew, so too did her ability to root out corruption, till that faith was as strong as any in the sector. Unfortunately, the same could not be said of her faith in his children, as her piercing gaze began to perceive the unclean in all around her. Again her confidence became her undoing, as she accused a senior official of the Ecclesiarchy of being one of the Masqued, with only her own abilities as evidence. When no tangible proof was found the official remained free, yet for Kadis it was too late. Having already admitted her heresy she was damned in the eyes of her fellow sisters by her own hand.
Now she remains unsure of herself. Is the merest hint of deviance so damning when it is so very endemic? When she herself was cast out of her beloved Order Famulous only for doing the Emperor’s will? She knows how the Scintillans spoke about those of Malfi, she was cursed in their eyes from the start, so why bother to fight it when they have already decided? What right have they to judge her when she is a bride of the emperor? The temptation is strong to acknowledge her past, return to her roots, and accrue honour for the Emperor in the way that a true noble of Malfi would. After all, with the Emperor on her side this time, what could possibly go wrong?
